Health (hp) is how many hits Welltaro can take before the run ends. Almost everything that hurts — enemy contact, bullets, spikes — costs exactly 1 hp. You start with 4 (6 in Boulder Style).

Healing past full doesn't vanish: each surplus point fills one slot of the small overflow gauge under your health bar, and every 4 slots converts into a brand-new permanent max-hp heart. Eating while healthy is an investment.
