The Aquifer is the third area, and it is entirely underwater. A breath meter counts down from 100; it refills by catching air bubbles released from the area's doodads; at zero the player starts losing hp. Gems sink slowly here, coral forms the breakable terrain, and the underwater Shop plays its own variant of the shop theme.
The Aquifer is also where Downwell{'}s fourth palette colour first appears — blue, in the default palette, for everything watery.
Enemies
Turtle, Red Jelly, Squid and Mohawkmon. Clams (Clam) sit on the terrain; they damage the player on contact but can be stomped.
Secrets
If the player reaches the Aquifer without having entered any side room, a single Jellofish spawns beside the first Red Jelly of the area. It appears once per run, and only while the run still qualifies for the Tomato — the two share the same internal flag.
