A breath meter counts down from 100; it refills by catching air bubbles released from the area's doodads; at zero the player starts losing hp. Gems sink slowly here, coral forms the breakable terrain, and the underwater Shop plays its own variant of the shop theme.

The Aquifer is also where Downwell{'}s fourth palette colour first appears — blue, in the default palette, for everything watery.
