A gem vein is a concentrated node of gems found in safe zones. Shoot it open (it takes a fair amount of fire) and it spills a fountain of gems — around 120G in total.
Each safe zone's treasure spot holds either a gem vein or a gun module. When you are at 2 hp or less the game is merciful and strongly favours the module, whose heart variant can heal you. In Arm Spin Style the spot is always a module, so gem veins never appear.
