A gem vein is a concentrated node of gems found in safe zones. Shoot it open (it takes a fair amount of fire) and it spills a fountain of gems — around 120G in total.

Each safe zone's treasure spot holds either a gem vein or a crate with a gun module. When you are at 2 hp or less the game is merciful and strongly favours the crate, whose heart-type module can heal you. In Arm Spin Style the spot is always a crate, so gem veins never appear.
